Blueberries, blueberries, cranberries

Blueberry is a deciduous shrub belonging to the genus Vaccinium from the Ericaceae family. Blueberries are widespread in the northern hemisphere and prefer temperate and cold climates. Grows in forests, wetlands, uplands and peat bogs. Blueberry bushes are low (grow up to 1 meter, on average 50-60 cm), the branches are straight with dark gray or brown bark.

Location:

Solar.

Soil requirements:

Loose, well-drained, acidic soils with an acidity level of pH 3.5 – 5.0.

Water:

In the mornings and evenings twice a week, using at least a bucket of water for each adult bush. On hot days, additional spraying is added. Blueberries especially need watering in July and August.

Feeding:

Only with mineral fertilizers at the very beginning of the growing season.

Blossom:

May-July.

Crop:

In spring, before the buds swell.

Landing:

You can plant blueberries in the spring, before the buds swell, but the preferred time is in the fall.

Methods and timing of reproduction:

Seeds, cuttings and dividing the bush.

Planting blueberries:

Before planting, seedlings in containers are immersed in a container of water until the root ball is completely saturated with moisture.

  1. For planting, you need to dig a hole 40-50 centimeters deep, 0.7-1.0 meters in diameter.
  2. Fill the hole with soil. When filling the hole with soil, you must leave 5-8 centimeters to the edge of the hole.
  3. Plant the bush in the center of the hole.
  4. The remaining 5-8 centimeters to the edge of the pit must be mulched.

Blueberry

Blueberry is a low (only 10–50 cm) shrub of the heather family. This plant is a northern resident, preferring moist and swampy soils. Blueberries usually grow in coniferous-deciduous forests, forming entire plantations.

Location:

Sunny or partial shade.

Soil requirements:

Well-drained and acidic soil (pH 4.9-5.0).

Water:

2 times a month, but during droughts more frequent watering is needed: the soil under the bushes should be moist all the time.

Feeding:

Both mineral and organic fertilizers are suitable. For 2-3 years the soil is dug up with peat mixed with sand. For organic matter, compost and rotted manure are used, and for mineral fertilizers, solutions of superphosphate, potassium magnesium and ammonium sulfate are used. In summer, the bushes are treated leaf by leaf with a solution of microelements. Blueberries do not tolerate fertilizers containing chlorine!

Blossom:

May June.

Crop:

The best time is the beginning of spring. From 3-4 years old, the formation of a bush begins by pruning. For fruitful development, you need to leave 8-9 young and strong shoots on the blueberries after pruning. To form the crown and stimulate the growth of shoots, it is necessary to shorten them by 20-25 cm, and once every 10-15 years, cut off all shoots at a height of 20 cm from the ground in order to rejuvenate the bush and give it new life.

Landing:

In August-September or late spring.

Methods and timing of reproduction:

By seeds and dividing the bush.

Pests:

Scale insects, aphids.

Planting blueberries:

The timing of planting blueberries is arbitrary; both spring and autumn planting of blueberries is allowed. Gardeners prefer autumn planting of blueberries, because over the winter the seedling will take root and begin to grow and develop with the beginning of spring.

  1. The preparation of the hole for blueberries begins in advance: if you plant blueberries in the fall, a month before planting, add an acidifier to the soil, add river sand for drainage, and, if necessary, enrich the soil with fertilizers. If you plant blueberries in the spring, prepare the hole in late autumn, before the onset of frost.
  2. The dimensions of the hole for blueberries are smaller than for blueberries; a length and width of 35 cm is sufficient. The depth of the hole is determined by the size of the root ball of earth, usually does not exceed 50 cm.
  3. 2-3 year old blueberry seedlings are used for planting in the ground. Immediately before planting, you need to water the seedling abundantly; this stage is necessary so that the soil around the blueberry root system sets, then the seedling will be easier to pull out of the container, and the risk of injury to the roots is reduced.
  4. Plant the seedling in the prepared hole, carefully straightening the roots. If the root system is not carefully laid out in the hole, the plant will develop worse and diseases are possible.
  5. Fill the seedling with prepared soil, water the bed with water, and mulch it to effectively retain moisture in the soil.

Cranberry

Cranberry is an evergreen creeping shrub of the heather family. It has flexible thread-like stems from 15 to 30 cm long, with narrow oblong leaves, ash-white underneath.

Location:

Sunny.

Soil requirements:

Very wet to swampy, in an area with high groundwater levels, acidic (pH 3.5-4.5), peaty or mossy forest.

Water:

The first two weeks after planting – daily, then the soil is kept slightly moist. In May and June, watering should be moderate, and in hot weather – daily. From August to October, cranberries are watered regularly, trying to wet the soil to the depth of the roots.

Feeding:

Regular: in the first year – from spring to the end of July, once every two weeks with complex mineral fertilizers. The first fertilizing is applied three weeks after planting. In mid-August and mid-October, potassium-phosphorus fertilizer is applied. In the second and third years, cranberries are fertilized according to the same scheme, and starting from the fourth year, the concentration of fertilizers in solutions is weakened and 6 fertilizing treatments are carried out per season.

Blossom:

May June.

Crop:

In May, the bush is formed for three years, and then only annual sanitary cleaning is done.

Landing:

In early spring, when the soil thaws to a depth of 8-10 cm.

Methods and timing of reproduction:

Seeds or green cuttings.

Pests:

It is often attacked by pests: black-headed lingonberry moth, apple scale insect, gypsy moth and many others.

Planting cranberries:

  1. Immediately before planting, you need to make holes in the soil, the depth of which will be 10 centimeters, the distance between them should be about 20 centimeters. The finished wells should be shed with lukewarm water.
  2. 2 seedlings are placed in one hole at once, and their height should be from 15 to 20 centimeters.
  3. Then the hole needs to be filled with soil; there is no need to compact it. On planted cranberries, the first fruits will grow only in the third year, but it will bear fruit fully
