Coniferous plants

Ornamental coniferous plants are always popular when it comes to creating a unique landscape. They decorate public gardens, parks, city flower beds, square borders and to this day continue to attract amateur and professional gardeners with their beautiful views.

Location:

Conifers do not like direct sunlight. The following types of plants that are especially sensitive to the spring sun should be especially shaded:

  • rock juniper;
  • Chinese juniper;
  • Canadian spruce;
  • Thuja and all varieties of coniferous trees with golden or blue needles.

Soil requirements:

Pines prefer sandy soil, spruce trees prefer clay soil, and yew trees prefer leafy soil rich in humus. Junipers, thujas, and cypresses are best planted in slightly acidic soils.

Water:

Coniferous trees and shrubs are not capricious. Coniferous plants need to be watered only for the first two years after planting on the site. Moreover, in the fall – abundantly, in the spring – little by little and only in the absence of natural precipitation. Sicilian fir and thuja need to be watered throughout the season for the first two years after planting.

Landing:

For large plants – fir, thuja, pine and spruce – the optimal place for planting from a tub into fresh air is April. For juniper, conifer, other shrubs and all varieties of small coniferous trees, August or early September is recommended. It makes sense to choose rainy, cloudy days.

Transfer:

When replanting, in order to reduce plant stress, care should be taken to ensure constant, abundant watering; vitamins, root stimulants; cover coniferous trees during frosts in the first year after transplantation. Caring for conifers: in order for the seedlings to take root better, you need to mulch and loosen the soil. Mulching not only creates a protective layer for the tree (from wind, sun, cold, excess moisture), but also helps to keep the top layer of soil loosened, which makes caring for the seedling much easier.

Spring is the most dangerous time of year for conifers

Required:

  • repeat loosening and then mulching the soil again;
  • provide abundant watering;
  • cover crowns exposed to the sun with protective screens.

Sunscreens must be left in place (especially for recently transplanted trees) until the soil freezes completely.
