The most respected community in the world of peatland development, the International Peatland Society (IPS), or the International Peat Society (IPS), has confirmed the list of participants of the IPS National Committee in Russia. Russia has become the 17th country where a special status of participation has been formed and approved – a national committee. Previously, the country was represented by a few individual participants.
The National MTO Committee currently includes 35 participants: representatives of research institutes, authorities responsible for the extraction of mineral resources and agricultural development, representatives of peat mining companies, students of agricultural academies, nursery employees, agronomists and other highly qualified specialists with in their professional activities, their relationship to the society of peat extraction and peat use. The Committee from Russia was headed by Evgeniy Igorevich Lysenko, head of the cover soil department and deputy general director of the Russian Peat Company.
The activities of the society are aimed at working together for the wise use and responsible management of peatlands and the development of mining. The mission is to serve all those who work with peatlands and peat by promoting, collecting, sharing and transferring knowledge and experience through events and projects that address key issues including climate change, biodiversity, the need for responsible use and restoration.
To achieve its objectives, IPS, through its Commissions and National Committees, regularly organizes conferences, symposia and seminars and publishes the results of scientific and industrial research. In May 2021, the Society held its largest event, held every 4 years – the International Peat Congress, with a renewed composition. IPS was created in 1968 in Quebec, Canada.
Today, IPS is registered as a non-profit, non-governmental organization in Finland, where the ITO Secretariat is also located. IPS currently has more than 1,700 individual, corporate, student and institutional members from 33 countries.
