Peat properties
Peat is an organic compound formed from the remains of decomposition of bog plants. It comes in different types, but each of them has a number of useful properties:
- Fertilizes depleted soil, restores the soil after pollution.
- Gives the soil looseness, allowing it to better retain moisture.
- Is a natural antiseptic – it cleanses the soil of bacteria and maintains healthy microflora.
- Used as a heat insulator.
- Safe for the environment and serves as a filter for natural waters.
Peat is one of the few types of minerals that finds complex use:
- Used as fertilizer in agriculture and as a substrate in greenhouses for growing various plants.
- Used as bedding material for keeping animals and as a covering material (mulching) in landscape design.
- Thermal insulation material in construction and pressed slabs for wall insulation are made from peat.
- It is a raw material in the pharmaceutical and cosmetology industries. Peat is also used instead of mud in the treatment of a number of diseases.
